Welcome to The Adventure

Who are we?

The Scout Association is the UK's biggest mixed youth organisation with over 520,000 members.

We change lives by offering young people fun and challenging activities, unique experiences, everyday adventure and the chance to help others so that we make a positive impact in communities.

In our District we get to do all sorts of fun things at our weekly meetings, camps, Gang Show and international expeditions. Lots of games, singing and helping others. Find out more by clicking on About Us or on the menu bar above

Where do I start to find out more information about joining a Scout Group?
You can find a page HERE where both parents and young people can get information about our Scout Groups and things they get up to.

District Newsletter-Apr 2017
23/04/2017 By DC-Russell Brooks

To all GSLs, ESLs, ADCs, and District Exec - Please forward to your teams.
Happy St George’s Day! I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the parade later today.
1. Adult Awards - Congratulations to all of our adult members who have been officially recognised during the
last year for their efforts by receiving awards, and a special mention to Dave Lowndes & Ewan Murray (Bar to
Silver Acorn), Keith Brooker, Jonathan Finch, Larry Neal & Ray Vassie (Silver Acorn) for their “St George’s Day
awards". All of our Adult members contribute so much of their time and enthusiasm, they all deserve thanks and
congratulations for their efforts! Thank you to all, whether you are “new" or “old”, a section leader, manager or
2. New District Explorer Scout Commissioner - I am really pleased to be able to announce that Richard Bird
has agreed to become our new District Explorer Scout Commissioner. We are both very keen to ensure that
Explorers across the District maximise all the opportunities that are available in Scouting, within the District,
County, UK and internationally, and I am confident we can do even more than we do at the moment with a
heightened focus on District support. Please congratulate Richard when you next see him and welcome him to
the role. At the same time, I want to express a huge thanks to Martin Allen, our previous DESC, who worked with
Jane during the increase in the number of ESUs over the last five years and put a huge amount of effort in
supporting our Explorers and our Network during that time of expansion. I am glad to say that he will remain
actively involved - now as a Beaver Scout Leader at 3rd Harpenden.
3. Merger of two ESUs - Having analysed numbers in both ESUs, and expected flow from Scouts over the next
few years, Kinsbourne ESU and Owls ESU have decided to merge with effect from the beginning of this term. I
am confident that this will create a stronger unit, with a consolidated larger leadership team, and a good balance
across the age range of Explorer Scouts. This is unrelated to Richard’s appointment as DESC as he will continue
to remain involved with the merged Unit.
4. New County website - The county has launched its new website. Please take a look as it is a lot easier
now to see when events are happening for our sections (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Scout
Network). More information about any of the County events listed at the bottom of the newsletter can be found on
these sites. Even better are the training pages, where it is now really easy to find out what is on offer from the
County. Click here to go the training page.
5. Sainsburys & Comic Relief Red Noses - Sainsburys have kindly given us enough Comic Relief Red Noses
for every Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer Scout in the District. These can be collected for each Group or Unit
rom Liz Jack at the end of the parade today. Her car, a blue Range Rover, will be parked at the front near the

Gift Aid update
30/06/2016 By Rod Keen

HMRC have published new model wording for Gift Aid Declarations to be used from 5th April 2016.  The new declaration has been shortened and simplified removing references to Council Tax and VAT.  Scout groups are able to claim Gift Aid on membership subscriptions and donations for sponsored events and should use the new Gift Aid declaration form for any donations from 5th April 2016 onwards.  Declarations that are already in place do not need to be updated.
