District Newsletter
September 2017
03/09/2017 By Russell Brooks

Hi everyone,
I hope you all had a great summer and are feeling refreshed and revitalised for the upcoming term.  I have a lot of items this month.  They are not in any particular order of importance so please skim all the way to the bottom to see if there is anything of particular relevance to you.
All the best
1.  Consultation on the next strategic plan - The Scout Association has prepared a draft proposal for the 2018-2023 strategic plan which you can read here. The Scout Association is keen for all adult volunteers, Network members and Explorers to have the opportunity to engage with the proposed plan and feedback their views.  Please take the time to read the strategic plan now and think about it.  I will be arranging an evening over the next couple of months for leaders who want to get together to discuss and provide joint feedback, and also will work with our Explorer Units to see how our Explorers can provide their input.
2. World Scout Jamboree - We will be sending out to Scout Leaders and Explorer Scout Leaders in the next few days an invitation to apply for selection.  Please can you make sure that this is forwarded to scouts/explorers asap.
3.  Scout Shop - HELPERS NEEDED
Helpers needed in the scout shop for one or two times a year - 10 to 15 percent discount for helpers.  Please contact Liz Jack.
I am also attaching a draft email that I would ask all GSLs and ESLs to please cut and paste and send to your parents/leaders.
4.  Orienteering Challenge - Everyone is invited to take part in an Orienteering event in Rothamsted Park on 7th October and/or at Stanborough Lakes on 4th November - see attached flyer.  For those Scouts intending to take part in Green Beret this year, this would be great practice for the orienteering part of Green Beret.  They can either take part individually or in pairs. Scout Leaders - if teams of your Scouts are going to attend, please let me know so that I can help the organisers plan for numbers.  There will be a prize for the winning registered Scout.
5. Cubs 7-a-side football competition - October 7th October from 3 to 6pm (NOTE REVISED DATE) - The Cubs 7-a-side football competition is organised and run by Pete Desborough from 1st Kimpton Cubs.  This is usually well attended with most packs entering a team.  Its great fun for everyone and if you think your cubs will enjoy competing in this Saturday competition, please confirm to Pete as soon as possible.  Each pack can enter 1 team and if you have more that 7 enthusiastic cubs, you can always bring 2 or 3 subs and let everyone play a few matches.  The venue is Roundwood School (indoors).
6. Bushcraft Instructor training day -  Stanborough Park is running a bushcraft training day which may be of interest to leaders - see attached flyer.  It is not a Scouting event but may be of interest and allows you to run group sessions at Stanborough Lakes using their area and equipment.
7. Harpenden Christmas Carnival -  Harpenden Christmas Carnival will take place on Sunday 26th November 2017. The Council are looking for walking entries which are dressed and presented in the Christmas theme to take part in the procession at 3pm.  If you would like to take part or you have any questions please contact me at the Town Council by calling 01582 463668, or by emailing
8. Writing Workshops with local author -  Camilla Chester, local Children’s Author, has contacted me about running fun writing working workshops with scouts and cubs.  She has been doing this successfully with local brownies and Guides.  She has proposed a couple of ways to fund the sessions:  "There are two ways, either I am paid (£50) through subs and parents order a book as additional, OR parents all pay (£5) for my visit, subs top up the outstanding book cost (£2 per child). The second way usually works best as then everyone takes home a book. I have two books published and you can find out more about me on my" If you are interested, please contact Camilla direct on
9. Remembrance Sunday 12th November 2017 -  The Parade will form up in Rothamsted Park: meeting from 10am; forming up at 10:15 and moving off 10:30 to the service at the Memorial Cross, Church Green.
10. Young Photographer Competition  -  Kelvin Goodson (ASL @ 12th Harpenden) is co-ordinating a local heat of the Rotary in Britain and Ireland Young Photographer competition.  You may wish to offer this to some or all of your young people in your section, either as part of the term's programme or as an additional activity outside of section activities. Please see the attached document to help you take part.
