Harpenden and Wheathampstead District Scouts

Explorers are young people, usually aged between 14 and 18 years old. They make up the fourth section of the Scouting family after Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

Structure and meetings

A group of Explorers is called a Unit.

Not all Units meet every week, partly due to activities, holidays, exams and the other commitments that crop up in a teenager's life, and also because Explorers tend to get out and about at weekends more often than other sections.

Activities

Explorers often get the chance to work with other Explorers in their District, not just their own Unit, so can take part in an even wider spectrum of activities.

There is also a range of ambitious badges and awards, through which Explorers can demonstrate their proficiencies and expand their interests.

Here you can find a PowerPoint presention about the Explorer Units in our District and also a Word form. This will assist getting a smooth transfer from your current Scout Troop to one of the District Explorer units.

Important News about the Scout Shop
14/09/2018 By DC-Russell Brooks

Dear Leaders and Parents,

There is currently a dispute ongoing in relation to the renewal of the lease of the Scout Hut at Tallents Crescent.  The landlords have unilaterally changed the locks and told us that we can no longer have access to the hut.  We will continue to try to resolve matters and reinstate our access rights, but in the meantime we have therefore had to temporarily suspend the Scout Shop.

Parents, this means that the Scout shop for the time being will not be opening at Tallents Crescent.  Whilst our shop is closed, we have arranged with St Albans District Scouts that our parents and leaders can use their shop.  A  map and opening times can be found at  http://www.stalbansscouts.org/st-albans-scout-shop/ and in the attached.

Parents can buy all core uniform from the shop.  Scarves will not be available from St Albans Scout shop however, as they were stored at our hut and are locked in for now.  As soon as they are accessible again, we will let you know.

Leaders can buy uniform and badges from the shop.  The shop manager has asked that leaders email her details of the badges they want so she can get them ready for collection (sales@stalbansscoutshop.org.uk).  Leaders will need to pay St Albans shop for badges, and seek reimbursement from their Groups direct.

All the best

Jo Busby is putting together an Expedition to Hohoe in Ghana for 2019. The school for the deaf that the District have been associated with for the last 12+ years need a playground. The Explorers & Leaders will be building the various equipment that you will find in a playground. Between now and 2019 they will be organising various events to raise funds for their trip.  Please help these young men and women on their adventure by taking part in their fund raising.  More about these events later on. See the Flyer here.
